| Glutathione peroxidases are selenium-dependent, antioxidant enzymes that catalyse the removal of hydroperoxides using the tripeptide glutathione as reducing substrate. The presence and importance of glutathione peroxidase for the oxidative stability of bovine milk is unclear. We failed to detect any specific activity in bovine milk using careful and comprehensive assay conditions. The apparent activity in milk that has been ascribed previously to glutathione peroxidase was shown to be independent of added hydroperoxide, completely inhibited by >6 mM EDTA, and could not be immunoprecipitated with a specific antiserum against the extracellular form of glutathione peroxidase. | O presente estudo teve por objetivo conhecer a flutuação populacional e a constância de cicadelíneos presentes na vegetação herbácea de um pomar de laranja doce (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), variedade Valência, em Montenegro, RS. O levantamento foi realizado com a metodologia da rede-de-varredura, tendo início em fevereiro de 2001 e finalizando-se em janeiro de 2002. | O óleo de nim obtido da planta Azadirachta indica, e formulações contendo os fungos Metharizium anisoplae e Beauveria bassiana, foram empregados para o controle da cigarrinha das raízes Mahanarva fimbriolata em cultivo orgânico de cana-de-açúcar. A ação desses produtos foi comparada com a mortalidade natural do inseto, através de parcelas sem o emprego de inseticidas. | When phosphorus (P) is applied to soils in excess of plant P demand, P accumulation takes place. By means of P fractionation, we studied the fate of P in 35 soils that had received long-term surplus P rates as fox and mink manure P (F&MM-P), considered as a sparingly soluble P source. We compared these data with those from the same soils under a more typical P management, i.e., fields amended with soluble P sources superphosphate and dairy manure (SP+DM). Auf den bereits 1975 und 1990 floristisch gut untersuchten Ackerflächen wurden mit 348 Vegetationsaufnahmen im Jahre 2002 erneut Daten zur aktuellen Segetalvegetation erhoben. | Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) is a fungal disease with a large ability to spread. Consequences may be rejection of grains for sale or even a large decrease of yield. Different trials were carried out in organic farming in a research project (funded by the French Ministry of Agriculture between 2008 and 2011) to achieve a better control of common bunt. Results confirm that the resistance of wheat cultivars is a factor to consider. This is a qualitative study with a group of 15 women farmers from District of Rincão da Cruz, Pelotas, RS. Data were collected in 2011 and 2012. Participant observations, focus groups, and individual interviews were performed, resulting in two thematic cores.
